A Long Way Gone
Ishmael Beah
Quote 1: Ishmael's father to Ishmael, page 54, paragraph 3:
"If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen."
I chose this quote because the circumstances of which it was said was unique and interesting. This quote also relates to Ishmaels life in Sierra Leone. This quote means really the opposite of Ishmael's job in his homeland. Ishmael has much hope for life, but still ends those of others. I also think that if Ishmael thought about what this quote actually meant, then he would realize what he was doing wrong.
Personal Connection:
I related to this quote because it made think of President Obama's message for America. President Obama belives that there is hope for a better day and something good to happen.
Question:
Can you name another historical figure that wanted a new hope for America? How does that relate to this quote?
Quote 2: page 70 paragraph 2
"Every time people come at us with the intention of killing us, I close my eyes and wait for death..." - Saidu
This quote relates to Ishmael's life back home. Again, it sort of plays the opposite role as Ishmael to wait and accept death, instead of fighting to it. Ishmael is fighting against the rebels, on the side of the government, and it since this quote was said after a close encounter with peaceful villagers, I was a little suprised. I thought that the people in small towns would welcome the government fighters, especially since the rebels are the ones hurting innocent people.
Personal Connection:
I chose this quote because it sounds like what I would eventually feel like if I was continually targeted to kill. I think anyone in that situation would start to lose hope after a prolonged period of time.
Question: How would you react to a life or Death situation?
