Final post A Long Way Gone

Quote 1:" Why do you think you should go to the UN to present the situation affecting the children in this country?" - Light Skinned Man, page 187

I think this quote relates to Ishmael's role back in Sierra Leone. In this quote, Ishmael has just been interviewed for a job presenting the experience of children living in Sierra Leone to the United Nations in New York City. Ishmael has finally been offered a chance to clean his slate and start a new life, and he will find many new opportunities in the US. I also think that Ishmael would be the supreme Candidate for the job, because he has seen the terrors of being a child soldier himself, and could relay that feeling better than any of the other candidates.

Character Judgement-Ishmael
I think it is great that Ishmael is getting this wonderful opportunity to make an impact on his country's situation. By telling the United Nations his experience in the war, Ishmael has a chance to get help from other countries and maybe save the lives of  other child soldiers. This is a new beginning for Ishmael, and if I were him, I would be bursting with hope.

Question: If you were given a chance to make a difference in America, and make the country a better place for all, would you do it?

Quote 2:" What is the purpose for your visit to the United States?""For a conference.""What is the conference about?""It is generally about issues affecting children around the world"..."do you have any guarantee that you will come back to your home country? Dialogue between an Immigration control officer and Ishmael- page 191

I think that Ishmael is going to have a little bit of trouble getting a grasp on American culture. Going to New York City will blow his mind, especially growing up in rural Africa. I also think that this quote shows a hardship Ishmael faced while heading to America. Ishmael really has no reason whatsoever to return to Sierra Leone, but this woman is asking him to guarantee it. This would be hard for anybody, especially having a past as horrible as Ishmael's.

Personal connections:
I think that I had a similar experience in our Ellis Island exercise in class! It was stressful to answer all these questions, and I think Ishmael felt that way too. Secondly, I cannot imagine Ishmael's reaction to seeing New York City. I was completely blown away the first time I went, and it never ceases to amaze me every time I go there now. Seeing the city from Ishmael's point of view must have been astonishing.

Question 2:
What have you ever seen that has absolutely taken your breath away?

Quote 1: I like your quote chose because I think this will really help Ishmael to make better choices for himself in a positive way. I think this will be his way to freedom and starting a new life.

Question 1: Yes, I think I would because my country needs help and any way I could help my country, I could.

Quote 2: I chose a quote out of this passage too. I thought this part was important because you can really see how important these questions were.

Question 2: I think I would say when I was younger and when I say the news about 911, that took my breathe away. I think this happened because I didn't except to see anything like this and it was amazing and sad at the same time that this was happening to my country.
