Ablaze
Perspective: Jack
Today we came back from our journey up the mountain. We told the rest of the boys that we are on an island, but more importantly that there are no people, just pigs. This came as a welcome fact to the boys, because we have meat now to eat instead of just fruit every day. But now thing started to turn odd at one boy’s strange mention of a beastie who lie in the forest, waiting to eat us. This boy claimed to have seen a snakelike thing in the dark. Ralph handled this situation by trying to calmly reassure the boy by telling him there was no beastie, which eventually induced everyone except the boy who had of course, seen the creature. The boy clamed that the beast had appeared twice, once appeared and then left, and then come back a short while later and tried to eat him!! I think it is preposterous that someone could think a beast like that inhabited our little island. I could very much tell that things would go wrong when Ralph suggested we make a giant fire in order to be rescued. An errant group of the choir stood up along with most of the rest of the group almost officiously. I can’t help but sometimes think if I were chief, I’d have this place like clockwork in a week flat. Ralph instructed the boys to go gather firewood and place it a large pile in the woods. The boys capered off into the forest, leaping and shouting with joy. After this large pile of dried wood and leaves was complete, Ralph asked for matches and turned to Piggy. Piggy shook his head, nobody on the island had matches with them on the plane. But, out of the silence came a voice, “Use the glasses!” And Piggy’s glasses were pinched, right off his cubby face before he could react. The boys proceeded to light the pile ablaze, and in a flash of orange light, the pile burned. What seemed like hours later, Piggy’s voice broke throught the chatter of boys and the sound of the fire. He was saying something about the beastie boy, something about how he had disappeared, and I haven’t seen him since…..
