LOTF post 3

A Special Place

Perspective: Simon

Ralph was a little frustrated today. His constant susurration that the other boys needed to help build shelters was bothering me all day. Even so, in around the three days time we have been on this island, we’ve got only two shelters standing. Barely. The shelters are so difficult to build well, the seemingly endless vicissitudes springing up whenever we feel like we’ve gotten anywhere. We’ve tried everything but it has become apparent that the only remedy to the situation is to get help building. Ralph also went off today to talk to Jack about hunting a pig. I overheard some of the inscrutable bickering, and it became apparent that Jack was completely rapt by the idea of catching a pig. He told a story that he had gone into the woods to hunt today and gotten so close to catching a pig. He was saying that if only he could somehow make barbs for his spear it would make him a better hunter.  Ralph was complaining that everyone was off swimming and eating, instead of helping get shelters ready and keep the rescue fire going.  Jack never even seemed to notice him.  Although I do like Jack, Ralph is a much better chief, all Jack seems to care about is his stupid pig. After I had heard enough of the argument, I went off into the jungle; I found some little ‘uns trying to get fruit down from a tree. I stopped, climbed the tree and handed down the ripe fruits to what seemed like an endless amount of grabbing hands. After everyone was content, I continued up through the tendrils of the forest into my special place.  I watched the slow descent of the sun, the butterflies flitting through the night sky, and the candle-buds blossom, embracing the island with their scent.
